Abstract

Corticotomy based on the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) is used to overcome several complications during orthodontic treatment. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are thought to play a cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis and apotosis. This study compared change of expression of MMPs after tooth movement with corticotomy to those without corticotomy. 24 Sprague-Dawley rat were used for experiment. Their first maxillary molars in both side were move by closed coil spring with 50N with corticotomy on the right side. The control side was carried sham operation. All rats were euthanized 3, 7, 10 and 14 days after surgery. Tissue samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H/E) and were carried immunohisotochemisry study for MMP-2, -9, -8 and -13. The changes were observed by light microscopy. There were similar bony resorption of experimental and control side in H/E stain. MMP-2 was expressed at 14 days in both side and the difference was not significant. However, the MMP-9 was expressed 3 and 7 days and decreased at 10 and 14 days in both side. The MMP-8 and MMP-13 were not expressed in all groups. Corticotomy did not affect the expressions of MMPs after tooth movement with or without surgery significantly.
